At the Rink: Hurricanes at Blue Jackets

by Craig Merz

COLUMBUS-- Kerby Rychel will replace Nick Foligno in the Columbus Blue Jackets lineup Saturday at Nationwide Arena in the second game of a home-and-home on consecutive nights against the Carolina Hurricanes (7 p.m. ET; FS-O, FS-CR).

Foligno was injured in the third period of the 4-1 defeat on Friday when he was checked by Hurricanes forward Brad Malone. Foligno was placed on injured reserve and the Blue Jackets (15-24-3) said he is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury.

Malone will not face discipline from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

Foligno has 25 points (six goals, 19 assist) in 39 games after a slow start for the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star.

"Losing Nick hurts us," coach John Tortorella said. "He wasn't happy with the results but he was in situations where he was playing much better."

Enter Rychel, the 19th pick in the 2013 NHL Draft who has been recalled from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League five times this season.

Tortorella was unhappy with the energy Friday and hopes Rychel can provide a spark.

"He's a player that is willing to forecheck, willing to play along the boards, smart enough to know that's a big strength of his game and get it into those areas," he said. "I'm going to put him in a third-line spot and let him have some chances in what he can bring us as far as energy. I don't think we had enough of that from enough people [Friday] night.

"In these back-to-back games you need energy. It's not about Xs and Os. We need to be consistent there."

Rychel, 21, has three assists in 11 games for the Blue Jackets this season and six assists in 16 NHL games since his debut last season.

He is the third Lake Erie player to join the team in the past week who will play against the Hurricanes.

Rookie goaltender Joonas Korpisalo (1-4-0, 3.65, .886) will start after Anton Forsberg made 25 saves against Carolina (17-18-7). The Blue Jackets' top two goalies, Sergei Bobrovsky (groin) and Curtis McElhinney (ankle) are on injured reserve.

Forward Josh Anderson was called up after Ryan Johansen was traded to the Nashville Predators for defenseman Seth Jones on Wednesday. Anderson played Friday.
