WASHINGTON (AP) -A person within the league says Nicklas Backstrom has agreed to a new contract with the Washington Capitals.
The person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has yet to announce the deal. The Capitals say only that they will make a "significant player-related announcement" on Monday.
Backstrom set career-highs with 33 goals and 68 assists this season. He was third in the NHL in assists, and his 101 points ranked fourth.
