Abdelkader scores winner as Griffins take 2-0 series lead on Hamilton

HAMILTON, Ont. - Justin Abdelkader scored twice and added an assist as the Grand Rapids Griffins downed the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-1 on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in their American Hockey League North Division semifinal series.

The Griffins trailed 1-0 after two periods, but Abdelkader assisted on a power-play goal by Ville Leino five minutes into the third to tie the game. Three minutes later, Leino set up Abdelkader to put Grand Rapids up 2-1. Abdelkader added an empty-netter with six seconds remaining in the game to put the game away.

Darren Haydar added two assists.

Abdelkader also led all players with eight shots in the game. He leads the Griffins with five points in the first two games of the playoffs.

Ryan White had the lone goal for Hamilton, which went 0-for-5 on the power play and is scoreless in seven man advantage opportunities this series.

Jimmy Howard made 22 saves for Grand Rapids, while Bulldogs netminder Marc Denis stopped 26 shots.

Game 3 is Monday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
