Players honored in Stockholm after defeating Canada in final Sunday

Winning the gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Championship may have gone to Sweden's head.

Sweden's players wore gold helmets as part of their welcoming at Sergels Torg, the central square in Stockholm, in celebration of their 2-1 shootout win against Canada in Cologne, Germany on Sunday that clinched the country's first tournament championship since 2013.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Henrik Lundqvist is golden once again.

The New York Rangers goaltender made 42 saves and stopped all four shootout attempts in Sweden's 2-1 win against Canada in the gold medal game of the 2017 IIHF World Championship at Lanxess Arena on Sunday.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist makes 42 saves; Russia defeats Finland to win bronze

Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) made 42 saves and didn't allow a goal on four shootout attempts to help Sweden win the goal medal at the 2017 IIHF World Championship with a 2-1 win against Canada at Laxness Arena in Cologne, Germany.

Lundqvist joined Sweden on May 12, following the Rangers elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He won each of his five starts allowing seven goals in five games. Lundqvist joined the team to play with his twin brother Joel Lundqvist, who is the captain.

Lightning forward scores goal against Finland; Blackhawks left wing leads tournament in scoring

COLOGNE, Germany -- They didn't leave with a gold medal from the 2017 IIHF World Championship, but Nikita Kucherov and Artemi Panarin made sure Russia left with a bronze.

Kucherov, a Tampa Bay Lightning forward, scored the final goal in Russia's 5-3 win against Finland at Lanxess Arena on Sunday. Panarin, of the Chicago Blackhawks, had an assist to give him 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in the tournament.

Nicklas Backstrom helps Sweden make World Championship final

Capitals center disappointed after losing in Stanley Cup Playoffs, looking for gold with win against Canada on Sunday

COLOGNE -- Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is honored to play for Sweden in the 2017 IIHF World Championship, but would rather still be competing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Washington lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Second Round on May 10, the second straight season the Presidents' Trophy-winning Capitals failed to make the conference final.

Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche) and Ryan O'Reilly (Buffalo Sabres) scored 1:51 apart during a four-goal third period to power Canada to a 4-2 comeback victory against Russia and into the gold-medal game in the 2017 IIHF World Hockey Championship at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on Saturday.

Canada will face Sweden, which defeated Finland 4-1 in the second semifinal, for the championship on Sunday (2:45 p.m. ET; NHLN), after Russia plays Finland for the bronze medal (10:15 a.m. ET; NHLN). Canada will be trying for its third consecutive gold medal.

33-year-old is leader on young team that defeated U.S. in quarterfinals

COLOGNE, Germany -- He's always been more about actions than words, so nothing has changed for Valtteri Filppula in that regard.

What has changed for the Philadelphia Flyers' veteran center is his own experience level, something he's stockpiled during 12 NHL seasons playing for three different teams. Filppula, 33, has gone from a promising Detroit Red Wings prospect to a battle-tested leader for the Flyers and his home country, Finland.

United States eliminated at World Championship

Finland wins 2-0 in quarterfinal match

The United States was eliminated from the 2017 IIHF World Championship when it lost 2-0 to Finland in the quarterfinals in Cologne, Germany on Thursday.

The U.S. had finished first in Group A by winning six consecutive games after a 2-1 loss to Germany in its opener. Finland finished fourth in Group B.
