NEW YORK -- It's hard to imagine this is the type of season Chicago Blackhawks brass envisioned they'd get from Artemi Panarin, an undrafted player who never played in North America prior to last fall.

But the 24-year-old had his first NHL hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 3:00 remaining, to help the Blackhawks to a 5-3 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

Situation Room: Girardi's goal gets overturned

2/17/16: Dan Girardi scores, but after the Blackhawks challenge, the goal is overturned due to goaltender interference

  • 02:03 •

At 1:52 of the second period in the Blackhawks/Rangers game, Chicago requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether Chris Kreider interfered with goaltender Corey Crawford before the puck entered the net.

The Referee determined that Kreider interfered with Crawford before the puck crossed the goal line. According to Rule 78.7, "The standard for overturning the call in the event of a 'GOAL' call on the ice is that the Referee, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that the goal should have been disallowed due to 'Interference on the Goalkeeper,' as described in Rules 69.1, 69.3 and 69.4."

Panarin steps up for Blackhawks

Rookie emerges after salary-cap crunch

by Brian Hedger / Correspondent

CHICAGO -- Their charter boat left before sunrise, cutting through a thick, early-morning fog that hung low over Lake Michigan.

It was September, but the air still held a tinge of humidity when Chicago Blackhawks rookie left wing Artemi Panarin and Arizona Coyotes forward Viktor Tikhonov embarked on a fishing excursion.

The good friends, who were Blackhawks teammates at the time, got the idea for the trip from a Chicago-based Russian couple who volunteered to help Panarin adjust to life in the United States.

Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault talks about Ryan McDonagh's status and facing the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday

  • 06:04 •

Each Wednesday throughout the regular season Kevin Weekes will be offering his pluses and minuses for the teams competing in the NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry game in his Weekes on the Web blog. Weekes will also be assisting fans with three must-watch elements of the game.

It's an Original Six matchup between two teams who were each a favorite before the season to win the Stanley Cup. Before the season, I had the New York Rangers coming out of the Eastern Conference and the Chicago Blackhawks or Los Angeles Kings coming out of the Western Conference. Right now, those three teams are still in the conversation.
