Milan Michalek addressed the media for the first time since being acquired by the Maple Leafs on Feb. 9. Here's what he had to say...
Does this all feel different given the time you spent in Ottawa?
Yeah, it does. It's a little different colour, right? I'm happy to be here. It's a great hockey team with a great history so I'm happy to be here and hopefully I can do good things here.
What sold you on agreeing to come to Toronto?
Well, like I said, I think they are building a good team here. With the history, it's also a great city and so I'm excited to be here and hopefully I can get this thing going.
How tough was the decision to leave Ottawa?
It was hard, I've been in Ottawa for seven years and we were all settled there. I talked to my wife and we made the decision.
How helpful was the Leafs front office in terms of helping you get to that point?
I talked to Lou, I talked also to coach, they called me on the phone. We talked about stuff and it also made my decision easier.
Are you looking at it like a fresh start?
Yeah, exactly. That's the way I was looking at it. It's a change for me, a new start and hopefully it's going to be a good change for me.
Were you shocked it was Toronto?
I was surprised too. We always play against each other, it's a big rival, it's going to be weird for sure playing the first game against Ottawa but it's the business here and I'm sure it's going to be fine.
How are you healing and when do you think you'll be back?
I think it's going pretty good so far and I think in a few weeks I should be back.
What do you know about the Toronto market?
I don't know much yet. I've only been walking around downtown so far. I know it's a great hockey city so I'm sure it's going to be busy.
Does it help to know Colin and Jared as well?
Yeah, I also know a few more guys here. It makes it easier for sure. I'm sure it's going to be good... I know Roman Polak and P-A Parenteau so it's all good.
