Maple Leafs Alumni team signs Wendel Clark

by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs
"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday the roster of invited players for the Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Game, taking place at Air Canada Centre on November 11, 2001 at 3 p.m. Fan favourite Wendel Clark, who played 13 seasons with the Maple Leafs during his 15-year NHL career, will take to the ice in his first game since retiring from the team in 2000.

"We're looking forward to an exciting game, and I know our fans will be thrilled to see Wendel back on the ice," said Tom Anselmi, senior vice president, business for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. "The teaming-up of former captains Clark, Sittler and Vaive is sure to bring back some great memories, and create some new ones for our fans."

Several Leaf alumni helped serve breakfast in front of Toronto's Union Station on Wednesday. In the back row are Stew Gavin, Carlton the Bear (non-alumnus), Rick Vaive, Wendel Clark and Mike Pelyk, with Ron Ellis in the front.
This year's inductees to the Hockey Hall of Fame - Mike Gartner, Dale Hawerchuck, Jari Kurri and Slava Fetisov join greats such as the French Connection from Buffalo, Gilbert Perrault, Rick Martin, and Rene Robert. The man who scored one of the most famous goals in Canadian history, Team Canada 72 hero Paul Henderson, will play alongside number 99 Wilf Paiement. Some players are travelling great distances to participate with Borje Salming, the Leafs all-time highest scoring defencemen, coming from Sweden to wear the Leafs Alumni jersey. Other players include Ron Ellis, Norm Ullman, Michel Goulet, Steve Shutt, Peter Stastny and many more. Hall of Famers Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, Al Arbour and Ted Lindsay will act as honourary coaches.

In addition to seeing the legends of hockey in action at Air Canada Centre, fans will also have the chance to contribute to a great cause. The game, being held in the memory of Carl Brewer, Cal Gardner, Bill Harris and Wendy Sittler, will also honour the memory of Ace Bailey and Mark Bavis who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 with a Toronto Fire Fighters boot drive at the Legends game. Proceeds will be donated to the Ace Bailey Fund, benefiting the families of the relief workers who also lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
