Leafs lose rematch to Sabres

HAMILTON, Ont. (AP) _ Stu Barnes scored two goals as the Buffalo Sabres completed their exhibition schedule Saturday night with a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Maxim Afinogenov, Vaclav Varada, Miroslav Satan and Chris Gratton scored Buffalo's other goals. Mikael Renberg, Nik Antropov and Mats Sundin scored for the Leafs.

Afinogenov opened the scoring when he got behind defensemen Anders Eriksson and Dmitry Yushkevich to take a breakaway pass from Curtis Brown. The speedy Russian had too many moves for rookie goalie Mikael Tellqvist. He pulled the puck to his backhand to tuck it behind the Swede.

Varada made it 2-0 with two seconds left in the first period. Barnes went in with Varada on a 2-on-1. The Czech, with a move similar to the one used by Afinogenov, scored on a back-hander.

Satan made it 3-0 in the second period thanks to the generosity of linemate J.P. Dumont. Dumont got a breakaway when Toronto's Alexander Mogilny gave the puck away. Instead of shooting, he made a drop pass to Satan, who flipped the puck in under the crossbar as Tellqvist went down in a confused heap.

Renberg scored his first goal for Toronto when he dived to get his stick blade on as pass and pushed it past goaltender Martin Biron.

Barnes made it 4-1 early in the third period, snapping a knee-high wrist shot that caught Tellqvist unprepared.

After Buffalo's Norm Milley missed the net on a penalty shot, Antropov slapped at a Buffalo turnover in the middle of the Sabres zone and watched it go in under the crossbar. When Sundin beat Biron on a power play with a slap shot from the top of the circle it was 4-3.

But Barnes flipped a dribbler between Tellqvist's legs at 19:21, and Gratton swung at a bouncing puck with Tellqvist out of the crease and put it in the net as time expired.
