The Maple Leafs finish up the California portion of their road trip tonight in San Jose. Here are the Leafs’ three keys to a win.
Sounds elementary enough, but the Leafs have gone back-to-back games without scoring for the first time this season. The Leafs have buckled down defensively and every other element of their game has shown improvement, but the scoring has disappeared. A couple of weeks ago the Leafs were first in goals per game and they have since fallen to fifth. Once the Leafs get some goals, they will win. It’s that simple.
Stick to the game plan
The Leafs have done some good things and it’s on the players to not let the frustration sink it. It appears that they are committed to keep playing the way they have, even if that means a lack of goals for the time being. So long as they don’t freelance the Leafs will be better for it, both in the game and long term.
Limit the mistakes, don’t overthink it
The Maple Leafs are learning and with it comes mistakes. Teams that are loaded with talent have taken advantage and San Jose is no different. Brent Burns is third in league scoring among defenceman. His ability to move the puck up to weapons like Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture will be a tough test for Toronto. Keep it simple.
