Keys to the Game: Maple Leafs vs. Hurricanes
by David Alter / Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are back home after a road trip to forget. Here are the Leafs’ three keys to getting a much needed two points.
Get confidence back and light the lamp
The Maple Leafs showed some frustration following their 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues. Their goal drought is something the franchise hasn't seen in the modern era. They’ve been seeing red everywhere except it matters the most – the lamp of the opposing net. The Leafs need a jolt of confidence. It’s clear the only way that happens is if the Leafs score early and often. Easier said than done against a Hurricanes team that has seen their fortune turn as of late. They are 5-2-1 in 2015
Special teams will be tough
The Carolina Hurricanes have the fourth best penalty kill at 87.4 per cent. They have gone 12 straight games without giving up a shorthanded goal. The Leafs’ power play could be in for a long night. The Leafs will put most of the emphasis of having a better 5-on-5 game as Carolina’s 0.70 goals for/against ratio at even-strength is the fifth worst in the NHL.
Staals gone wild
Eric and Jordan Staal have been Leaf killers throughout their entire career. They have combined for 59 points in 61 games against Toronto. The Leafs’ commitment to defence will get a tough challenge from this offensive duo.
