The Maple Leafs soldier on, taking on the Flyers tonight in Philly. Here are the Leafs three keys to getting two points.
Us against the world mentality
It’s a commonly used source of motivation. Times are tough and nobody is going to help you out it, except yourself. The luck has been so bad for the Leafs it appears it can’t get any worse. Philly fans are arguably the meanest when it comes to North American sports. The environment will be hostile, but ultimately it’s up to the Leafs look to themselves and not accept any type of failure. The tempo has to be full throttle throughout. Getting the offence going is a must.
Limit Vorachek and Giroux
Jakub Vorachek and Claude Giroux sit first and fourth in the scoring race with 58 and 52 points respectively. Vorachek is in the midst of a five-game point streak (six assists) while Giroux had his own five-game point streak snapped on Thursday against the Jets. If they get points, the Flyers usually come out on top. Shutting both guys down can virtually secure a victory.
It’s a case of extremes for the Flyers. Winners of four of their last five games, Philly has scored a power play goal in all five contests. They rank fourth overall with the man advantage. However, the Flyers have struggled on the penalty kill at 74.7 per cent. The game can easily be decided away from even-strength. Given these teams history of physicality, the gate to the sin bin could get a workout.
