Keys To The Game: Leafs vs. Sabres

by David Alter / Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs are in Buffalo to take on the Sabres tonight. Here’s what the Leafs need to be mindful of.

Take them seriously

Yes the Sabres have struggled mightily this season. They only have eight points through 18 games this season, but if you don’t take them seriously they can surprise you. Previous to the last couple of years, the Toronto Maple Leafs struggled at First Niagara Center. The Leafs have everything to lose and Buffalo has everything to gain.

Take earlier meeting and copy it

The last time the Leafs took on the Sabres, they were in the midst of a funk. They weren’t playing well and got things turned around by playing their most complete game by beating the Sabres 4-0. The Leafs need to take that template and continue to apply it in Buffalo. Given its close proximity, they will have the energy of Leafs fans in the crowd.

Special Teams and Goaltending

James Reimer is expected to start for the Maple Leafs. Coming off a brilliant performance against the Ottawa Senators, Reimer will be looking to string together solid performances. The penalty kill had another clean sheet against the Penguins. Lacking any offensive punch, the Leafs need to keep in that way.
