The Maple Leafs were clinging to a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. They were almost able to hold on but with Phil Kessel off for elbowing Cory Stillman tied it 3-3 with just under four minutes to go.
When overtime solved nothing, it was off to the shootout. After Tyler Bozak had already scored for the Leafs, Colby Armstrong had some great dangles as he roofed it to put the Leafs ahead. JS Giguere stopped Chris Higgins to give the Leafs the shootout win.
Number of games the Leafs went without scoring the first goal until Tuesday.

MacArthur was the only one not to score but he did have several chances including an open net in the first but his backhand went wide. The line combined for five points, a plus three and 10 shots. MacArthur, Grabovski and Kulemin sit one, two, three in scoring.
Luke Schenn had another excellent game on the back end for the Blue and White. In his past five games he has two points and a plus two as the Leafs have gone 2-3.
Against the Panthers, he had nine hits which matches his season high. He now has 154 on the season which leads all defencemen and his 96 blocks are second on the team. He saw 25:37 of ice-time which led all players in the game and was one of the highest for him on the season.
Grabovski and Kulemin not only are great friends but they both have now scored career highs in goals. With his first period goal, Kulemin now has 17on the season. Grabovski had a Tomas Kaberle shot go off his shin pad and in giving him 21 on the season.
After turning 27 on Monday, Grabovski gave himself a birthday present. The two points he had Tuesday give him 37 for the season surpassing his total from last season when he had 35 in 59 games.
Ron Wilson on why he went with Colby Armstrong and all-righties in the shootout:
"He's been successful so far in the shootouts this year. And if you studied the statistics, (Scott) Clemmensen doesn't have as good a save percentage against righties ... the next would have been Phil (Kessel) and possibly even Joey Crabb. So we're going righties until we're either winning or losing with righties tonight. "

Game Notes: For the second time in 10 days, the Maple Leafs and Hurricanes will go head-to-head. This is the third meeting between the two teams with Carolina 2-0.
In the last game, the Hurricanes defeated the Leafs 6-4 in a chippy affair that saw Tim Gleason punch Nikolai Kulemin and knock him out the game.
