Ferguson: Mats Closes in on Darryl...

by John Ferguson / Toronto Maple Leafs

John Ferguson is entering his fourth season as general manager of the Maple Leafs. Ferguson became the 12th person in team history to hold the role when he was introduced August 29, 2003.

Mats Sundin needs one more goal to tie Darryl Sittler for the most goals scored by a Maple Leaf.

There was a lot of talk that we should trade Mats at the trade deadline. The talk never came from us and I hesitate to mention it now because if you talk about something, some people will automatically think it’s possible.

But with his play, Mats has proven what we said all along: there is simply no way you could ever get back a player whose value was close to comparable.

Mats had a goal and an assist against Tampa and two assists in our win over Ottawa.

But the thing about having a player like Mats Sundin as your captain is the influence he brings to players on the team.

He’s had such an affect on our young players, on Alexander Steen and Matt Stajan. Mats has been here for all of Darcy Tucker’s career as a Leaf. Same for Tomas Kaberle.

He has been such a valuable player for the Leafs. He’s been here the longest. He’s a certain Hall of Famer and as I mentioned, he’s one goal away from tying Darryl Sittler for most goals as a Leaf.

If he ties the record, look for a modest celebration. I don’t think you’ll have the big celebration with the players coming off the bench on the road. Mats won’t have a chance to break the record at home until next Tuesday. Naturally, I wouldn’t mind if he had already broken it by then.
