Building Passion For The Game At Maple Leafs Hockey School

by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs

Hundreds of young hockey players took part in the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey School this summer, an exciting hockey program that features Leafs players, coaches, and hockey specialists to teach the game.

The goal is to instill a balance of all skills and produce passionate players with the leadership, teamwork, and attitude that characterize a complete hockey player.

The day-school is also about introducing the game of hockey to those who may not have been exposed to the sport before. We caught up with one young player, Oscar, who always wanted to learn to play hockey but with practice and games taking too large a time commitment by his mother Dorothy, a business owner, he wasn't able to. As a compromise this year, she enrolled Oscar in an after school program where he played floor hockey.

Dorothy decided to explore what other options were available to Oscar over the summer months, they were both excited to learn about the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey School at the MasterCard Centre, Oscar was even more excited to learn that he would meet some of the Toronto Maple Leafs players and receive a personalized jersey.

On top of learning to play hockey, Oscar also decided that he would like to play goalie, as a Carey Price and Roberto Luongo fan, he has opted for the challenge to play goalie at floor hockey games, and did not hesitate to do the same at Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey School.

Oscar loves his goalie equipment and is known to practice putting on full goalie gear several times a day, entertaining any guests that frequent his home.

In addition to building his goalie skills, the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey School did wonders for his self-confidence. When asked what his favourite part of the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey School, Oscar enthusiastically replied, "the coaches were very nice, they taught me a lot of stuff. And I made a lot of friends. They all skate very fast. I am very happy when they cheered for me at the game. I want to play with them again next year!"

"His favorite part was learning how to save the pucks, learning how to master different techniques. He has become obsessed with saving goals," added Dorothy. We look forward to watching Oscar develop for many more years on and off the ice.

The day-school aims to provide girls and boys, novice to peewee, the opportunity to develop all areas of their game including; skating, puck handling, passing, shooting and off-ice strength and conditioning – a comprehensive, total hockey experience in a fun and educational environment.
