Bowen: Broadcasters Bottle Drive a Huge Success

by Joe Bowen / Toronto Maple Leafs

Joe Bowen is the Voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs, having broadcast
over 1,600 Toronto Maple Leaf Games.

For a few months now we have been telling you about the Broadcasters Bottle Drive for Leukemia Research being put on by the UFCW Local 12R24 and the Beer Store.

The drive was held May 26th and 27th at all 441 Beer Store Locations across Ontario. Thousands of dedicated volunteers took part over the two days collecting your beer, wine and spirit empties in an effort to raise funds to fight Leukemia.

Recently at the UFCW Gala the grand total was announced. With Beer Store President Ted Clarke in attendance, union head Wayne Hanley, with the assistance of Frank Falconer and Rob Edwards announced that the Broadcasters Bottle Drive had raised $500,001!  However the big news was yet to come.  With the UFCW locals across Canada working just as hard at other fund raising initiatives the grand total of the contribution to Leukemia Research was a whopping $1,519,000!

I want to thank Harry Neale of Hockey Night in Canada and Dean Brown the Voice of the Ottawa Senators for assisting with this great event. To all of the volunteers and the folks who horded their empties for a few weeks or months to make their donation our many thanks.
