This is a very special time of year for me and my family.
My son Sean some 17 years ago was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was the most frightening day of my life until the doctors at Sick Kids explained to us that the strain of Leukemia Sean had was curable. In fact they told us there was a 95 percent chance of him being cured. What they also told us was that 10 years prior to that the odds were not nearly as good. In fact they were 40 percent.
A few months after Sean started his treatments, Michael Fraser the President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union asked if I would be the master of ceremonies for his golf tournament. He informed me that the proceeds go towards Leukemia Research in Canada. That started a long relationship that continues to this day.
This weekend, May 24th and 25th, the Beer Store along with volunteers from Local 12R24 of UFCW will be asking you to donate some or all of your empty beer, wine or spirit containers towards Leukemia Research. Just bring your empties back to the beer store and they will do the rest.
Last year this weekend alone raised $500,000. Various other fund raising events across Canada netted an additional $1,000,000. We continue to make great strides towards finding a cure for this dreaded disease, you can do your part this weekend.
