Back on the road for the last multi-game trip of the year, the Bolts will head into TD Banknorth Garden tonight to meet the East-leading Bruins. Mike McKenna will get the start in goal, and the good news on defense is that Matt Smaby looks like he might be able to play. Rick Tocchet called him a gametime decision.
Paul Szczechura is now healthy but is expected to be scratched, and if Smaby plays there will be another scratch as well. Defenseman Matt Lashofff found himself surrounded by media in the locker room as he makes his return to Boston to face the team that drafted him. Martins Karsums
also received his share of attention, and Tocchet spoke about how important these games are for both.
“Were looking for guys like Lashoff and Karsums to play like its the playoffs,” Tocchet said. “They can't afford to pack it in.
“Lashoff has the tools to be a good NHL defenseman. This is a big summer for him to get himself ready for next year to see if he can stick with the big club.”
On a lighter note, Szczechura was the victim of a practical joke this morning as he came off the ice last to find his dress shoes had been spray painted bright yellow with his number, 38, stenciled on the front of both of them. Szczechura took it in stride and wore them on the team bus after practice.
Luckily, the team hotel is connected to a mall so a replacement pair will be easy to obtain.
