Shimberg will start his new position on May 1, 2013, providing counsel to the executive team while assuming direct oversight responsibilities for all legal matters for the organization, along with owner Jeff Vinik’s outside real estate interests.
“We welcome Jim with open arms as he has elected to join the TBS&E family,” said Leiweke upon making the announcement. “He has an outstanding legal track record in Tampa Bay with Holland & Knight and most recently as a public servant for the City of Tampa and Mayor Bob Buckhorn. His wealth of local knowledge, legal expertise and deep community relationships will elevate our executive team as we continue to develop the organization and its presence in Tampa Bay.”
Shimberg will provide advice, counseling and various other legal services to the organization on corporate, contractual, real estate and administrative matters; negotiating and drafting agreements for events, sponsorships, television broadcasts, venues promotions and media activities. He will also manage the legal and human resources, administrative and information technology service functions within the company.
“When the opportunity to work with Jeff Vinik and Tod Leiweke as they continue their efforts to build a world-class organization was offered to me, it contained everything that I could imagine in a dream job,” said Shimberg. “I look forward to combining my work with the law and real estate with my love for sports and a passion for all the good things the organization does in the Tampa Bay community through the Lightning Foundation.
“As I join the Lightning, I will miss working with the outstanding people who work for the City of Tampa, including my friends on the Tampa City Council, the members of the Mayor’s senior staff and, of course everyone in the City’s Legal Department.”

He was also the firm’s local group leader for the Tampa Bay real estate and land use practice, co-chairing the National Land Use practice group.
“Jim has been a friend and advisor to me for 25 years and has been a key player in all that we have accomplished over the last two years,” said Mayor Buckhorn. “He has been intensely committed to our community, and our residents were better because of his counsel and guidance. Jim has always shared his vision for what Tampa is and can be, and I am confident that he is going to continue to do great things for Tampa in his new role.”
Shimberg and his family have been very active in Tampa Bay for decades, accepting leadership roles with several community and civic organizations dedicated to the development of the area’s business and philanthropic organizations.
