Sweden advanced to the Gold Medal Game at the 2006 Winter Olympics in dominant fashion with a 7-3 win over Czech Republic. Lightning players accounted for two of the 10 goals scored in the game. They will take on Finland, who defeated Russia, 4-0, for the Gold Medal on Sunday.
Fredrik Modin opened the scoring for the Swedes 34 seconds into the game on the very first shot of the game. He finished the game with four shots on goal and a plus-4 rating. They also got goals from Christian Backman, Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik Sedin, P.J. Axelsson, Jorgen Jonsson and Tomas Holmstrom.
Valcav Prospal did not go down without a fight though as he scored the Czech Republic's third goal of the game and added an assist on their first to lead the team in points. Prospal finished the tournament with six goals to rank first on the team. Pavel Kubina scored a goal and added an assist in seven games played in the tournament.
Finland shut out Russia, 4-0, to continue their undefeated record this Olympics and advance to the Gold Medal game. Saku Koivu, Olli Jokinen, Ville Peltonen and Toni Lydman netted goals for the Fins.
Modin and Team Sweden will take on Finland for the right to stand on the top of the podium on Sunday. Czech Republic will take on Russia in the Bronze Medal game on Saturday.
