To Be Presented Certificate of Appreciation During Game this Evening
TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning are being honored by the United States Army during the first intermission of tonight’s home game against the Philadelphia Flyers. On behalf of the entire organization, team president Ron Campbell will receive The Department of the Army Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service from Sergeant Major Steve Valley, Director of Army Public Affairs-Southeast. The award recognizes patriotic civilian service that contributes to the mission of an Army activity, command, or staff agency, or to the welfare of Army personnel.
"Tonight's presentation is a true testament of the commitment that the whole Lightning organization shows to local military veterans that have served in Afghanistan and Iraq,” said Valley. “No other professional sports organization has done as much to recognize our military men and women as the Lightning have by creating the Military Hero of the Game Program and continuing it for a second season. The Lightning should be looked at as a role model for the rest of the NHL in honoring those who defend America's freedom.”
For the past two seasons, in conjunction with Grow Financial Credit Union (formerly MacDill Federal Credit Union), the Lightning has honored an individual at each home game as the “Military Hero of the Game.” That individual receives game tickets for he or she and his or her family members and an invitation to a pre-game hospitality function at the St. Pete Times Forum. The individual is then recognized in-arena on the team’s “Lightning Vision” with an accompanying public address announcement.
“As a community leader with a captive audience on a regular basis, we at the Lightning strongly believe in recognizing those in the military that give so much of themselves to defend our nation and protect our freedoms,” said Campbell about the in-arena salute. “We are pleased our fans continue to so warmly recognize the men and women of the military with a standing ovation during this special time of each game. And we encourage civilians throughout the nation to support and embrace every member of our armed services.”
The Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service may be awarded to civilians not employed by the Army or Army contractors, or officials of the Department of the Army at the policy development of approval level. It also may be awarded to groups, including employees, business firms, fraternal organizations and quasi-military units.
