TAMPA BAY
– The Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation will host the 2009 Education Night, presented by the Suncoast for Kids Foundation and Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, for local students tonight at the St. Pete Times Forum as the Lightning face the Atlanta Thrashers (7:30 p.m., Sun Sports, AM620 WDAE).  A portion of all proceeds will benefit SERVE. A private, nonprofit agency founded in 1969, SERVE recruits diversely talented volunteers from the community to serve Hillsborough County Public Schools by enriching the curriculum, assisting school administrators and meeting the needs of individual students.

During this special evening fifth-grade students from Robles Elementary School will be taught the “Hockey by Numbers” program by Lightning television broadcaster Rick Peckham. The program is designed to tie together awareness of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s achievements with fifth-grade FCAT math concepts.  Peckham will perform the program at 3:45 p.m. in the Channelside Room just inside the Jeep Club Entrance at the St. Pete Times Forum.

The 30-40 minute presentation will incorporate video highlights of the team and a workbook containing math problems relating to the Lightning and its players. Students will apply formulas they work with each day in class to learn about the hockey club’s star players, how the team travels and how a total team concept can result in success.

After the ‘Hockey by Numbers’ program children will receive a tour of the Tom McEwen Press Box and will experience a tutorial on game operations from JC Kent, St. Pete Times Forum Video Engineer.

Following the tour guests will have an exclusive dinner reception. In the reception participants will learn about the Tampa Bay Lightning education initiatives.

Following the meeting the children will watch the Lightning take on the division rival Thrashers.
