Lightning Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Partner for Running Shoe Giveaway

TAMPA BAY – The Lightning Foundation and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida have joined forces for the second consecutive year to give running shoes to 100 students and parents form Academy Prep Center for Education in Tampa and St. Petersburg. The program kicks off an eight-week training model for families to train in preparation for the Reindeer Run on December 13 at the St. Pete Times Forum.
The shoe giveaway will take place at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, November 10 at Feet First, located at 3401 Bay to Bay Boulevard in Tampa, and at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18 at Feet First, located at 4949 4th Street in St. Petersburg.
Academy Prep Center for Education is a college preparatory program for children who meet the criteria for the Federal Free and Reduced Meals Program (at or below the federally-calculated poverty line). Each grade level (5-8) is comprised 30 students split evenly between girls and boys. Academy Prep believes parents must be directly involved in the lives of their children at school. The school requires that each family provide up to 50 service hours each year.
The mission of Academy Prep is to promote the educational, social and ethical development of middle school students who qualify for need-based scholarships and have the ability and desire to succeed in a rigorous academic program and to become positive, productive members of society.
