The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Don Campbell as the seventh Lightning Community Hero of the year this afternoon during a Feeding Children Everywhere event in Ybor City. Lightning vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman attended the event and presented Campbell with the $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program. He will donate the money to Feeding Children Everywhere.
After learning about the effects of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, Campbell and his wife pulled their life savings together to start Feeding Children Everywhere. The program was set up to help feed people that were malnourished all over the world. Since Feeding Children Everywhere started nearly three years ago, more than 50,000 volunteers have packed seven million meals for hungry children around the world. Campbell's vision to empower and mobilize people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children has exponentially grown, providing millions of less fortunate individuals with meals through his hard work.
Within the first year that Feeding Children Everywhere began operating, more than five million meals have been shipped to four different continents throughout the world to starving children. His hard and diligent work has enabled schools and orphanages to triple in size through the amount of meals supplied through the program. Campbell has not limited his work to the Tampa Bay area, but helped changed lives all over the globe.
