Day 12 World Championships Round Up

by Peter Pupello / Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning players collectively enjoyed an all-around successful day at the World Championships on Tuesday, as each helped guide their teams to victory.

Teddy Purcell assisted Team Canada in earning a 5-1 victory over Belarus, while Nate Thompson and JT Brown helped Team USA cruise past Switzerland 5-2. Victor Hedman also factored in to Team Sweden’s 4-0 shutout of Latvia.

Purcell logged 8:49 of ice time for the Canadian side despite not landing on the score sheet. The win allowed Canada to finish first in Group A, as it will now play Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Thompson had one shot on goal for the Americans and recorded 12:20 of ice time, while Brown skated in 9:33 of ice time and also fired a shot on goal. Team USA finished with a 4-2-0-1 record in the round robin, good for second place in Group A. The result sets up a quarterfinal showdown with Finland on Thursday night. The game will be a rematch of a one-sided 5-0 American win over the hosts just a few days ago.

Hedman, meanwhile, had one shot in 14:15 of ice time for the Swedes. Sweden next takes on the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals to be held on Thursday.

Fans can tune into all the action on NBC Sports Network beginning Thursday with the start of all the quarterfinal matches.
