Best of the Web: Week of May 4-11

by Peter Pupello / Tampa Bay Lightning

Bolts defenseman Mattias Ohlund recently spoke with a reporter from the Swedish newspaper Expressen to discuss his future in hockey (Click here for article).

Mattias Ohlund missed all of the Lightning's 82 regular season games in 2011-12.
Ohlund, who missed all of the Lightning’s 82 regular season games in 2011-12, underwent surgery on both knees prior to the team’s opener on Oct. 7. While he was forecasted to be back in the lineup at some point during the regular season, a return never quite panned out. Since joining the Lightning prior to the 2009-10 season, Ohlund has served in key roles both on and off the ice, anchoring the Bolts blue line with a veteran presence, while also serving as a mentor and role model in the locker room to young defenseman and fellow Swede budding pop star Victor Hedman (see below).

Moving on to less serious news (and we use the term “serious” loosely here as I just saw StormDawg walk by my office in full costume as if the Tampa Bay Times Forum is now doubling as some film set for one of those “This Is SportsCenter” commercials), with Sweden performing so well at the World Championships through the first week of the tournament, Victor Hedman apparently decided to channel Benny Andersson (or maybe it’s Bjorn Ulvaeus, but definitely one of the two) and performing a duet with fellow countryman Gabriel Landeskog that would be sure to make Tim McGraw and Faith Hill jealous. Ok well maybe I wouldn’t go that far, but you can be the judge.

As continues to countdown the Top 10 reasons why the Bolts are primed for success in 2012-13, there might as well be an 11th reason added to the list. According to’s annual NHL Attendance report, the Lightning ranked 13th in the 30-team league in attendance in 2011-12, averaging 18,468 fans per night who showed up to “Be The Thunder” behind the Lightning. Throughout the portion of the home schedule, a total of 757,192 fans walked through the doors of the Tampa Bay Times Forum to cheer on the Bolts, serving as a positive indicator of the great support that is sure to return when the team hits the ice again in 2012-13.
