TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Audrey Mabrey as the eighth Lightning Community Hero of the year this afternoon at Community Action Stops Abuse, located in downtown St. Petersburg. Mabrey, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to the Community Action Stops Abuse and Hands Across the Bay.

Mabrey suffered an incredibly traumatic event in 2009 when her estranged husband physically abused her, an incident that ended with her suffering burns to 80 percent of her body. She was hospitalized and medically induced into a coma after the brutal attack. Mabrey knew that after her husband attacked her she had to help her two sons become violence free and teach other victims how to escape a similar fate. Having experienced situations that no human should ever have to endure, this victim courageously stepped forward to help other potential victims act before it is too late.

Mabrey volunteers for domestic violence survivors seven days a week when they are home alone, in court or in the hospital. She empowers survivors of domestic violence to seek safety, better utilize legal processes and understand their immediate family dynamics and the cycle of violence. Mabrey has created public service announcements, spoken at functions and appeared on television and radio, locally and nationally, to help raise awareness. She has stepped up to be the spokesperson for domestic violence survivors.
