TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Alfred Astl as a Lightning Community Hero during the first period of tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Astl, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will contribute the money to his charity of choice, Trinity Café
As head chef at Trinity Café, a 501(c)3 non-denominational restaurant for the homeless, hungry and working poor of Tampa Bay, Astl has prepared over 700,000 meals throughout his nine years of service to aid and assist individuals in need. While many of the establishment's patrons refer to Trinity Café as Astl's restaurant, he himself insists the endeavor is not about him, but rather those he serves.
It was not until Astl's very first day at Trinity Café when he realized the widespread epidemic of homelessness throughout the Bay Area. The revelation not only caught him off guard, but more importantly, served as a call to action. Since then, Astl has carefully prepared each meal as if it were for his own family, using only the freshest of ingredients in all of his dishes and serving each guest their food on china plates, while utilizing glassware and real silverware. Although specific, these examples serve as merely a small sample size to further illustrate Astl's greater sense of compassion for all human beings.
