ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (19-11-1-1, 40 points), proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and the AHL Manchester Monarchs, shutout the Idaho Steelheads (19-12-1-1, 40 points), 2-0, Saturday evening, in front of 5,890 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Netminder John Murray recorded his second shutout of the season, with forward Dale Reinhardt and left wing Todd Jackson each registering a goal in the win.
The game heated up just two minutes into the match as Ontario defenseman David Walker and Idaho left wing Brent Shepheard dropped the gloves in front of the Reign net just off of a face-off. The intensity from both teams was evident early on as the players were sent to the box after Walker brought Shepheard down just in front of the blue line.
After a scoreless first period, Ontario pulled ahead at 9:23 in the second, as newly acquired forward Dale Reinhardt hit a one-time shot past Idaho goaltender Matt Climie, picking up his third goal of the season. Left wing Chris Curran registered the assist on the play extending his point streak to five games. The Reign held on to their one goal lead throughout the remainder of the period, outshooting the Steelheads 12-9, and ending the period with the Reign ahead, 1-0.
After a physical battle between the teams in the third, the Reign retained their one goal lead heading into the final minutes of regulation. Idaho pulled goaltender Matt Climie in the final seconds of the match, attempting to tie it up with a one-man advantage over the Reign. With 19 seconds left on the clock, Reign left wing Todd Jackson made a diving shot toward an empty Steelheads net, lighting the lamp for the eighth time this season, to push the Reign ahead by two. Reign goaltender John Murray stopped all 38 shots he faced in the match, blocking 20 in the third period alone, to help secure the Reign victory over the Steelheads with a final score, 2-0.
