VICTORIA, B.C. ? The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and the AHL Manchester Monarchs were defeated by the Victoria Salmon Kings, 5-2, Friday evening in front of 5,573 fans at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Right wing Geoff Walker and left wing Todd Jackson each scored in the match, with goaltender John Murray stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced.
The Salmon Kings (25-9-1-1) jumped out to an early lead over the Reign, netting three goals midway into the first period. Right wing Wes Goldie netted a power play goal and his 30th goal of the season, at 12:23 to put the Salmon Kings up, 1-0. Twenty-three seconds later, left wing Darryl Lloyd put the Salmon Kings up by two when he netted the puck past Reign goaltender John Murray at 12:46. Defenseman Dylan Yeo gave Victoria three on the board as he lit the lamp at 13:34 in the stanza, sending the teams into the second with a score, 3-0.
Ontario (19-13-1-1) took charge in the second period, blanking the Salmon Kings as they held the club scoreless throughout the 20-mintues of play. The Reign came charging back netting two back-to-back goals in the stanza, with the first coming off the stick of right wing Geoff Walker. Walker netted his 11th goal of the season at 13:08 in the period as he shot the puck past Salmon Kings netminder Jonathan Boutin, off an assist from left wing Chris Curran, to make the score, 3-1. Left wing Todd Jackson brought the Reign within one, five minutes later, lighting the lamp off an assist from right wing Brad Mehalko at 18:19, to make the score, 3-2. Jackson?s goal marked his 10th goal of the season and extended his goal streak to three games (3g).
Late in the third period the score remained, 3-2, when Reign center Tim Kraus and forward Dale Reinhardt each took a penalty, giving the Salmon Kings a late third period power play opportunity. The Reign pulled Murray from the net for an additional man on the ice, but Victoria found the net twice in the final minutes of play, scoring two empty net goals to clinch the match. The Reign fell to the Salmon Kings with a final score, 5-2, with Victoria extending their win streak to 14 games with the win.
