BOISE, Idaho – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Idaho Steelheads 4-3 before a crowd of 3,650 at Qwest Arena Wednesday night.
The Reign and Steelheads traded goals in the first period. Chaz Johnson’s wrist shot from the blue line snuck under the crossbar and into the net at 6:10. Idaho tied it at one on a goal by Kael Mouillierat at 9:02.
Aki Seitsonen’s power-play goal at 11:49 of the second period put Idaho up 2-1 before Johnson struck again for Ontario. With the period winding down and the teams playing 4-on-4, Alex Bourret picked up a loose puck at neutral ice and sped into the Idaho zone. Johnson followed the play and one-timed Bourret’s cross-ice feed past Dusty Carlson to tie the game at two with just 24 seconds left in the frame.
Michael Pelech’s seventh goal of the season at 5:18 of the third period gave Ontario a 3-2 lead. Kyle Kramer avoided a check along the left boards and shoveled a pass into the crease where Pelech was waiting to snap it home. Dustin Friesen’s goal at 7:12 evened the game at three, but Pelech again put the Reign up by one at 15:31. Kraemer came across the blue line and was stood up by an Idaho defender. Pelech picked up the loose puck and beat Carlson down low, and the Reign beat the Steelheads, 4-3.
Beau Erickson earned the win with 40 saves, while Carlson stopped 20 shots in the loss.
