PREVIEW: With the same lines, Kings look for same results tonight against Colorado

by Alex Kinkopf / Los Angeles Kings

GOING FOR TWO:
Tonight marks the first of three meetings with the Avalanche this season; the Kings will travel to Colorado’s Pepsi Center on January 4, and the clubs will finish their regular season series with another match up at STAPLES Center on January 27. The Avalanche are 2-2-0 so far this season; they’re finishing off a two-game road trip through California, and are coming off of a 3-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Kings, 1-3-0, are finishing off their five-game home stand, they picked up their first win of the season Friday night, beating the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in OT.

POINTS, POINTS, POINTS: The Kings have not lost a game in regulation to Colorado since January 22, 2013. Since then, the Kings have picked up points in eight straight games against the Avalanche, posting a 7-0-1 record. The Kings are 4-0-1 in their last five games against the Avalanche on home ice at STAPLES Center.

LINEUP: According to how the Kings skated this morning at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, there appear to be no changes to the lines they skated with on Friday night. Matt Greene and Jordan Weal stayed on the ice for extra work, they are tonight’s presumed healthy scratches. Jonathan Quick left the ice first, he’ll get the start in net tonight.

PRESEASON TELLING: These two clubs met twice during the preseason, the Kings winning 2-1 in a SO on September 27 at the Pepsi Center, where Dustin Brown sealed the win with a goal in the fourth round of the shootout, and 4-0 on October 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena at Frozen Fury XVII, where the Kings outplayed Colorado throughout, outshooting the Avalanche 32-15.

RE-DO WITH RETO: Colorado’s Reto Berra will make his second start of the season tonight; he’s coming off of a 35-save shutout performance over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. Berra was in net for the Avalanche in the Kings’ 4-0 preseason win over Colorado on October 3, allowing four goals on 32 shots faced. Berra has only appeared in one regular season game against the Kings, which came on March 10, 2015 – when he replaced Calvin Pickard in the first period, allowing two goals on 22 shots faced in the Kings’ 5-2 win. In 41 career starts with Calgary and Colorado, Berra is 15-22-4 with a .904 SV% and a 2.85 GAA.

WHERE THEY LEFT OFF: The Kings posted a perfect 3-0-0 record against the Avalanche last season, outscoring Colorado 12-4. Jeff Carter led the Kings in scoring against Colorado last year, recording five points (3G, 2A), while Kyle Clifford and Marian Gaborik each chipped in with two goals. Can Carter add to his point-total (2A) tonight, while Clifford and Gaborik try to hit the score sheet for the first time this season?
