Post-Game Notes: Coyotes vs. Kings

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

  • The Kings out-shot Phoenix 36-15 tonight
  • The 15 shots allowed was a season low (previous low was 19 shots)
  • The Kings entered the day allowing the second fewest shots in the NHL (27.7 per game)
  • The Kings season high for shots is 37 (Dec. 27 at San Jose)
  • Jarret Stoll won 11 of 14 faceoffs tonight (78.6 percent).  He entered the day tied for fifth overall in the NHL
  • The Kings have allowed eight goals in the last four games (two in each game)
  • Rob Scuderi played in his 99th straight game tonight (streak started Dec. 7, 2009)
  •  Justin Williams played in his 599th career game tonight
(Re reviewed goal): “It disrupted the flow of the game. Both teams were skating well, but when you take a long break like that there’s no question that it throws a wrench in the gears for the next couple of shifts. It took some momentum away but I liked the grit in this game. The guys stuck with it, they played real hard, there were a lot of pucks to the net but we need to have a better net presence. The overall attitude was tremendous and I love the ‘stay with it’ attitude.”

(Re Power Play) “Through this whole stretch the power play could have made a difference. The penalty killing could lose you a game, power plays tonight could have definitely won us the game. We had some good things going on in the early power plays, but as we got deeper into the game we lost the momentum and the cohesiveness in our power play group.”

(Re scoring chances): “I think the offensive guys did a good job.  Their goalie had a great game tonight and they did a good job at clearing pucks.  I think we had our chances and we had the pressure on us a lot of the night and it’s unfortunate to give up two as quick as we did there.  The good news is we get another crack at it in a couple of days.”

(Re first goal): “When I saw it during the play I didn’t think it was a good goal, but obviously they got the benefits of video replay so they could take a closer look.  It’s their call.  That happens during a game and it was good for them on the scoreboard so that’s all that really matters.”

(Re ending the slump): “Just doing what we’re doing and sticking to the game plan.  I think we had a few good games here.  We’ve been working hard, just not getting rewarded for it on the score sheet but it will come.  We just have to keep playing our game plan like we are and it’s going to happen for us.”

(Re power play): “Well obviously they play good PK.  For us I thought we did some good things; some good shots on net and some good looks around the net, we just couldn’t connect them.  He made a few saves not knowing where the puck hit him I think.  Right now it’s been going like that for us but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves and get going again.”

(Re confidence level): “Obviously the confidence is not the highest but it is what it is.  You go through stretches like this in the season and you have to find a way to get out of them. We found a way to get out of one earlier and we’re going to find a way to get out of this one.  Again I thought we were doing some good things tonight…and we have to come out on Saturday and win a hockey game.”

(Re game recap): “When you can come in and steal one like that that’s a good two points for us.  Bryzgalov was obviously very good.  We got ourselves into some penalty trouble…they put a lot of pressure on us through our penalties but we managed to weather the storm and find a way to win.”

(Re western conference): “It’s a dog fight everyday.  It feels like an 82-game playoff schedule.  Every game you go in it’s almost like [it] is a must win.  That’s the way you treat it…You try to give your players enough rest, you try to make sure we’re prepared but every game is very valuable points.”

(Re Bryzgalov): “He was very strong, we kept a lot of pucks to the outside but he was very strong.  Not a lot of rebounds, and I thought we did a pretty good job around the net, and then he made the stops he had to make.”

(Re game recap): “We knew it was going to be a tough game, and we recognized how good those guys are and we gave them way too many power plays.  If we give them that many they’re going to capitalize, and we can’t afford to do that in the next game.”

(Re Bryzgalov’s performance): “We said when everyone is good Bryzie [Bryzgalov] has to be great, and he was great tonight. We weren’t bad but we weren’t near as good as we need to be, and Bryzie was really good.”

(Re penalty kill unit): “I think the face offs were very huge, and just blocking shots, and I think Bryzie [Bryzgalov] was outstanding today.  The goalie is a big part of the team.”

11:30 a.m. at Toyota Sports Center. Team travels to Phoenix after practice.
