Off The Post - Pre-Game Meals

by Deborah Lew / Los Angeles Kings

*Editor’s Note: staff writer Deborah Lew will boldly seek to satisfy the burning curiosity of fans by using current events and thought-provoking creativity to get a comprehensive off-the-ice look at the boys who’ve captured our hearts and our attention span 82+ nights every year. Each edition will feature two questions: 1) The “Shot,” which will relate to the player giving the answer; and 2) The “Pass,” which will ask the player to name a teammate. Keep checking back for new exciting editions of “Off the Post!”

Food is an important part of any diet, which means that professional hockey players - like the LA Kings - put a lot of time and consideration into the food they eat, especially before a game where they have to absolutely be at their best.

Ever wanted to make saves like Jonathan Quick, hit like Dustin Brown, score goals like Anze Kopitar or make plays like Mike Richards? If so, you’ll definitely want to read on to find out what kinds of food fuel their fire.

In addition, everyone says the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Is this true? If so, find out which players would be the keepers of their teammates’ hearts via their stove skills!

The Shot: What is your favorite pre-game meal or snack?

The Pass: Which of your teammates would you trust to make the meal for you?

Anze Kopitar

Shot: Gluten-free pasta with pink sauce and chicken on top.

Pass: Probably Willie Mitchell

Robyn Regehr

Shot: It’s usually the same. On the road I’ll start with a bowl of chicken noodle soup, the main course will be peas with spaghetti and meat sauce and chicken or salmon with that, after that I’ll have a salad, and if I’m really feeling it I’ll have some ice cream to top it off. I don’t know how many calories, I don’t even want to count! At home I won’t have a soup, but I’ll just have a salad and a nice big bowl of pasta with some chicken, and normally I’ll get a pesto sauce.

Pass: Oh man…cooking? These guys? That’s two scary things. But I’ll keep it between Jarret Stoll and Willie Mitchell.

Drew Doughty

Shot: Pasta with chicken, shrimp and mushrooms in it. I’ll have a Caesar salad as well. Favorite snack is bananas with peanut butter.

Pass: Probably Lewie – he has the same meal as me, so he’ll know what to do.

Matt Greene

Shot: Chicken spaghetti

Pass: Mitchy – Mitch’s wife is a cook, so I’ll just have her do it over at his place…he can take credit for it.

Willie Mitchell

Shot: Wild salmon – everyone knows that!

Pass: I’d go with Mike Richards because he knows how to cook fish – he won’t overdo it.

Trevor Lewis

Shot: Chicken and pasta

Pass: Mitchy – he’s a foodie.

Dwight King

Shot: Chicken and pasta with a little bit of marinara sauce.

Pass: I lived with Mullz for a while, and I know he can make the same dish, so I’ll go with Mullz.

Slava Voynov

Shot: Coke and ice cream. I’m kidding – pasta and chicken with Alfredo sauce.

Pass: Robyn Regehr

Matt Frattin

Shot: Chicken pasta for pre-game meal; snacks I love cheesecake for dessert and pizza – all the good stuff that isn’t good for you!

Pass: I heard Lewie is a good cook.

Dustin Brown

Shot: Pasta with salmon

Pass: Lewie isn’t a bad pick because he lives with Dewey and Dewey does absolutely nothing, no probably Lewie does do all the cooking there.

Jonathan Quick

Shot: Chicken

Pass: I don’t know if any of them cook, I don’t know that I’d trust any of them. Mitchy maybe – I think he can cook.

Colin Fraser

Shot: Penne pasta with meat sauce; tomato, onion, garlic Ragu sauce; three pieces of cheese toast.

Pass: Willie Mitchell, he’s a foodie and his wife’s in culinary school. It might be a little too simple for him, he might use some weird ingredients.

Kyle Clifford

Shot: Baked beans with bacon. I had it one time – I had a really good game. It’s not healthy though – I have to watch the figure.

Pass: Marti – I think he’d give it a little Mexican twist.

Alec Martinez

Shot: Chicken and pasta, pretty standard.

Pass: Keaton Ellerby – he makes a killer pasta. The guy is more pasta than an Italian grandma.

Keaton Ellerby

Shot: Chicken and pasta

Pass: Alec Martinez

Jake Muzzin

Shot: Gluten-free penne from Il Fornaio with a chicken breast on top with a vodka sauce and a little bit of bacon; some bread, olive oil, balsamic, spread some parmesan in there; diet coke and water.

Pass: I lived with Noles and Kinger for a while in the minors, so I know they can cook.

Daniel Carcillo

Shot: Hamburgers and French fries!

Pass: Kinger – because then I’d get some bison!

Ben Scrivens

Shot: I don’t know if I have a favorite – I’d kind go with usefulness over favorite, otherwise it’d be whatever your favorite food is, probably not the healthiest thing! I usually go spaghetti and meat sauce.

Pass: Willie Mitchell

Mike Richards

Shot: Pasta and chicken, as always.

Pass: Willie Mitchell – he’s really into food.
