by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

GOFFSTOWN, NH – The Manchester Monarchs scored two third period goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, led by former Monarchs Assistant Coach Scott Pellerin, with a 2-0 victory at Sullivan Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (1-0-0-0) won their first game in exhibition play. Bridgeport (1-1-0-0) takes their first loss of the pre-season.

“We skated extremely well,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “Our energy was good; we were physical and I thought we created the type of compete level that we’re looking for with the adjustments we made to our systems.”

The Monarchs broke a scoreless tie just 28 seconds into the third period when right wing Jordan Nolan wristed a shot over the shoulder of Sound Tigers netminder Kevin Poulin. Nolan took the pass from Monarchs center Andrei Loktionov down the right wing leading to a two-on-one opportunity. Nolan skated in and launched a shot from just inside the right face-off circle for the eventual game-winning goal and his first tally of exhibition play.

The Monarchs received an insurance goal when Loktionov found the back of the net at 4:38 of the third period. Monarchs defenseman David Kolomatis took a shot from the top of the right face-off circle producing a rebound that was headed to the right corner of the zone. Loktionov grabbed the puck out of the air with his glove, dropped it to the ice and lifted a tough angle shot over the outstretched Poulin. Loktionov’s first goal of the exhibition season was also assisted by right wing Brandon Kozun.

Monarchs netminder Martin Jones (0-0-0) made saves on all nine shots he faced. Monarchs goaltender Jean-Francois Berube (1-0-0) relieved Jones midway through the second period and made saves on all eight shots he faced, combining for the shutout. Poulin (0-1-0) registered 39 saves on 41 shots in his first loss in exhibition play.

Manchester went 0-for-7 on the power play. Bridgeport was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
