PROVIDENCE, RI – Right wing Lauri Tukonen tallied a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Manchester Monarchs glided past the Providence Bruins 3-2 in overtime in front of a crowd of 6,173 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday night.
Manchester (3-2-0-0) takes sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Division with six points. Providence (2-2-1-0) now sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with five points.
Center Pascal Pelletier scored his team leading third goal of the season at 7:53 of the first period to give the Bruins the early lead. With Monarchs defenseman Bryan Schmidt in the penalty box for interference, center David Krejci threw the puck in front of Manchester's goaltender Jason LaBarbera and Pelletier skated into the line of fire to redirect the shot into the back of the net. Right wing Petr Tenkrat also assisted on the first goal of the night.
Rookie left wing Matt Moulson collected his first professional goal at 2:58 of the middle frame and evened the game at 1-1. The Monarchs sprinkled Bruins goaltender Brian Finley with shots while on the power play. Left wing Noah Clarke and defenseman Eric Werner sent the puck in on net and Moulson was on the doorstep to jam in a rebound.
Eight minutes later, Manchester took control with their second power play tally of the game. On the points, defenseman Peter Harrold and Werner played catch until a lane opened up. Harrold slid the puck onto the tape of Tukonen who fired in his second goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage.
Manchester contained their one goal lead up until the 3:24 mark of the third period when defenseman Sean Curry lit the lamp for the first time this season. A valiant effort by Curry who carried the puck around the net and then picked up his own rebound for the goal. Tenkrat and Krejci assisted on the tying goal.
Tukonen duplicated his earlier tally as he picked up a pass from Harrold at the bottom of the left face-off circle and blasted a shot past Finley for the win. Werner earned his third assist of the night.
LaBarbera (3-1-0) earned his third win of the season stopping 28 shots. Finley (2-3-0) took the overtime loss for the Bruins with 27 saves.
Manchester went 3-for-11 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
