Monarchs Announce Home Opener On October 7

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, are set to open the home schedule of their 11th season in the Queen City at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday, October 7, Monarchs President Darren Abbott announced on Wednesday.  The team will also hold their second annual Education Day game on Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. and their annual New Year’s Eve game on Saturday, December 31.

The Kings brought their AHL affiliate to Manchester in 2000 and dropped the first puck in the Verizon Wireless Arena on November 16, 2001.  Over the first 10 seasons, the Monarchs have collected a record of 5-5-0-0 in their Home Opener.

The second annual Education Day reflects the Monarchs continued commitment to the youth of New Hampshire and their education.  On this day, the Verizon Wireless Arena will be more than just an entertainment venue – it will be the largest classroom in the Granite State!  Last season, the Monarchs hosted nearly 1,200 middle school students from 17 schools across New Hampshire for the first Monarchs Education Day on November 17, 2010.

Each student attending the game will receive a workbook which will provide educational insight on the different aspects of the hockey game being played out in front of them.  Students will be asked to calculate the number of points that a Monarchs player has recorded so far into the season, they will use critical thinking to solve hockey related word puzzles and they will hone their geography skills when identifying a player’s hometown.

Throughout the concourses of the arena, students will be treated to a variety of interactive exhibits focused on health and wellness, geography, arithmetic, reading and science.  Additionally, the in-game promotions on the video board will include quizzes and trivia geared specifically toward the students.

“Last season’s Education Day was a huge success and we’re eager to see the program grow this year and in the future,” explained Abbott.  “It’s great to see the students get excited about learning while at a hockey game.  Everywhere you look in the arena on Education Day, there is something to learn.”

To help facilitate this event, the Monarchs have partnered with the New Hampshire Department of Education, New Hampshire Association of Middle Level Educators and the New Hampshire PTA.

The annual New Year’s Eve celebration brings the largest indoor fireworks show in New Hampshire to Manchester.  A fun-filled night full of games and the Great Baby Race in between exciting ice hockey action entertains everyone in the family.  Following the game, fans can stay for one of the best fireworks shows in New England.

The Monarchs regular season schedule and their opponents will be announced in early August. For ticket information, visit or call (603) 626-7825.
