Fans can relive the greatest season in Los Angeles Kings history with The Official Story of the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings. The commemorative book contains key details and images from the run, a foreword by Luc Robitaille, an introduction from Bob Miller and an afterward from Dustin Brown, and also included is an exclusive DVD with Bob Miller and Jim Fox announcing the Cup-clinching Game 6.
Here now on LAKings.com, we share a portion of this special book as Mike Richards – who came to the Kings in a trade from the Philadelphia Flyers on June 23, 2011 --
-- in his own words talks about the experience of winning with a club in his first year with that club:
Opening the season in Europe turned out to be good for us because it gave us a chance to come together as a team. That extended time on the road was particularly important for me too — it was my first season with the Kings and I was able to start the process of getting to know my new teammates.
We won our first game, against the Rangers in Stockholm, and it always helps to start the year with a win. When we got back from Europe, we had high expectations for the season and knew we had a very good team on paper. You always have high hopes at the start of the year, but we were particularly excited because we believed we had the kind of team that could compete in the Western Conference.
We experienced some inconsistency early in the season, but I think that was due to the fact that we had some new players, like me, who were getting used to playing with one another. Confidence is such a big factor for any athlete in pro sports, and by the time the playoffs began, we were playing well and feeling very confident. We went into every playoff game thinking we could win.
As I look back, the last year had a lot of dramatic ups and downs for me. I was traded to the Kings and really had no idea what to expect. I knew I was joining a very good team, but you never expect to win the Stanley Cup in your first year with a new organization. I had some highs and some lows, and went through an injury, but once the playoffs began, I was feeling like myself again. Everything culminated with the ultimate high of winning the Stanley Cup. It was a real roller coaster ride for both Jeff Carter and me because Jeff went through the same thing. To be a Stanley Cup Champion with Jeff, after all we both went through, makes it that much sweeter.
