7 Things To Watch For Today On Fox Sports West

by Alex Kinkopf / Los Angeles Kings

FLYERS (26-23-6) at KINGS (30-20-6)

PENNSYLVANIA PAIR: After Pittsburgh visited Thursday; the Kings host Philadelphia today for the first of their two meetings with the Flyers this season. The Kings haven’t skated with Philadelphia in over two years, their last meeting coming on October 15, 2011. The Flyers haven’t been to STAPLES Center since December 30, 2010.

HOOK UP THE SPRINKLER, WE’RE DRY: The Kings come into today with three goals in their last 303:10 minutes of play, in their last five games, and Anze Kopitar has each and every one of them. With the Kings’ struggles to score, have come struggles in the win department. The Kings are 1-6-1 in their last eight games, getting shutout twice, and failing to score more than two goals in seven of those games. Philadelphia comes into today at 19th in the league in defense, allowing 2.87 goals per game. Can the Kings find something?

THE CARTER: Tonight marks Jeff Carter’s first game against the Philadelphia Flyers since they dealt him to the Columbus Blue Jackets on June 24, 2011, a day after Philadelphia dealt Mike Richards to the Kings. Carter sat out Columbus’ sole date with the Flyers in the short time he graced the Blue Jackets’ roster on November 5, 2011, and hasn’t had a chance to skate against Philadelphia since being traded to the Kings on February 23, 2012.

Carter played 502 games for the Flyers in six seasons with Philadelphia, notching 364 points (194G, 170A).

THE LAST TIME THEY WERE HERE: The Flyers’ last visit to STAPLES Center came on December 30, 2010, when Mike Richards (2G, 2A) and Jeff Carter (1G, 1A), who were still with Philadelphia at the time, combined for six points (3G, 3A) in a 7-4 drubbing of the Kings.

Can Richards and Carter do the same to the Flyers in Kings uniforms tonight?

The only player still on the Kings roster to score that night against the Flyers was Justin Williams. Williams is due for output, recording just four points (1G, 3A) in his last 18 games.

HEY, SIMMER: Today will be the first time Wayne Simmonds skates at STAPLES Center since he was traded to Philadelphia, along with Brayden Schenn, for Mike Richards on June 23, 2011. Simmonds, after being drafted 61st overall in 2007 by the Kings, played 252 games in a Kings uniform for three seasons from 2008-2011, recording 99 points (42G, 57A).

MR. ONE-THOUSAND: Robyn Regehr will play in his 1,000th-career NHL game today. Regehr spent 11 seasons with the Calgary Flames (’99-’11), two with the Buffalo Sabres (’11-’13), and now is in his second season with the Kings. Regehr is the last Kings player to record a goal other than Anze Kopitar, 303:10 minutes of live-play ago, six games ago, 11 days ago.

MISSION CONTROL: Darryl Sutter has seen every NHL team from the helm of the Kings’ bench since his hiring in January of 2011, except for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Kings’ Head Coach has led this franchise to a 2012 Stanley Cup Championship, and to the 2013 Western Conference Finals in his two seasons in Los Angeles.

Can Sutter find success in his first go-around against the Flyers today in Los Angeles?
