Training Camp: Day 5

by Kristi Hennessy / Winnipeg Jets

Day 5 of the Winnipeg Jets short and sweet training camp is in the books and now the hourly countdown begins with less than 48 hours before the puck drops between the Winnipeg Jets and the Ottawa Senators. It will be 'All Systems Go' at 2:00 pm at the MTS don't be late!

The Jets took to the ice this morning at 10:30am with almost everyone in attendance, with the exception of Antti Miettinen and Zach Bogosian, both sidelined with injuries. At 11:45am, just when we thought they were finished for the day, (based on Claude Noel's "light skate" comment on Wednesday), out came the Zamboni to clear off a fresh sheet of ice. The team skated for another 45 minutes after the ice clean, working mainly on their power play and penalty-killing units.  They wrapped things up with a fun shootout game.

A new face stepped onto the ice for the first time with the Jets today. Anthony Peluso, who was claimed off of waivers on Wednesday, arrived late last night and was at the rink ready to go first thing today.  Coach Claude Noel seemed to like what he saw from the 6'4", 234-pound winger.

"Sniper, shootout sniper," smiled Noel during his press conference. "I thought he was pretty good, I think he was pretty nervous and you could tell. He didn't really know any of the players on our team and he got in late and probably didn't sleep. I think he was excited, but he was a deer in headlights so we tried to make it simple. He scored a nice goal on the one three-on-three down low there, it was good."

Will he be in the lineup on Saturday afternoon? Time will tell, said Noel.

"That won't be determined today. Maybe by tomorrow's practice we'll have a little bit of an idea of what we're going to do here, who we're going to put in and exactly where."

Peluso doesn't know any of the players in the Jets dressing room but did say that he felt very welcome from the moment he arrived and is very excited to get started with his new team.

"I'm going to come in here and try to be a physical presence," said Peluso. "Get as many minutes as I can and not just be a guy who sits on the bench for two or three minutes, stick up for my teammates whenever it's necessary and go from there."

Andrew Ladd was not at practice on Wednesday morning....due to personal matters. He was however, back on the ice Thursday morning sporting a big grin ear-to-ear. He and his wife Brandy welcomed a baby boy, Locklan Joseph Ladd, into the world yesterday at around 1:30 pm.

"It was an amazing moment," said Ladd. "Anyone who has had the chance to witness their child being born, it's unlike anything else. I can't even really put it into words."

Ladd said that Locklan arrived a little bit earlier than they were expecting but that both mother and baby are healthy and doing just fine. The name Locklan is Andrew's middle name.

The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club would like to send a big congrats to Brandy, Andrew and their families on the new addition and wish them the best of luck with their new baby boy!
