Islanders prospect to represent the Utah Grizzlies at the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game on January 23

Islanders prospect Trevor Smith has been selected to represent the Utah Grizzlies at the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition, January 22 and 23 in Stockton, California. Utah became the Islanders’ ECHL affiliate this season.

"We're very happy for Trevor that he has been justly recognized by the ECHL as an all-star and we're very proud of his development," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "We felt it would be best for Trevor to go to Utah, where we knew he would get a lot of icetime and responsibility. To his credit, he made the most of his opportunity and has been an outstanding player for the Grizzlies. The coaches are raving about his attitude, work ethic and skill."

Assigned to Utah by the Islanders and AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers on October 31, the 22-year old Smith is currently the Grizzlies’ leading scorer with 11 goals, 14 assists and a plus-12 in 22 games. He has recorded two four-point games for the Grizzlies this season. The British Columbia native is second among ECHL rookies with 108 shots on goal and tied an all-time Utah record with 13 shots December 4 versus Phoenix.

Smith was signed by the Islanders in March after two standout seasons at the University of New Hampshire. He attended the Islanders Prospects Camp this summer and 2007 Islanders Training Camp in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Trevor Smith will be joined at the ECHL All-Star Game by Michael Haley, who has been with the Sound Tigers for the last two weeks. With Utah, Haley had ten goals, five assists, 94 penalty minutes and a plus-seven in 22 games.

Hosted by the Stockton Thunder and the City of Stockton at Stockton Arena, the 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game presented by Jackson Rancheria and Bud Light will be played on Jan. 23 with the 11th edition of the Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game Skills Competition being held on Jan. 22.
