Al Trautwig, Butch Goring, Ken Danekyo, Ron Duguay and Dave Maloney look back at the best games from the 2009-10 season and classic games from seasons past every Monday and Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. only on MSG Plus.
“Hocky Night LIVE! Summer Ice” premieres Monday, June 21 with a classic Islanders playoff game as New York takes on the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of the 1993 Patrick Division semifinals. The Islanders pulled off a 5-3 victory to advance to the division finals, but the game was marred by, and is remembered today by one of the most vicious cheap shots in hockey history. After Pierre Turgeon scores to put the game and series out of reach, Dale Hunter of the Capitals hits Turgeon from behind resulting in a separated shoulder and concussion. Turgeon would miss most of the next round and Hunter received a 21-game suspension, the longest in NHL history at that time.
The “Summer Ice” crew weighs in on the hit:
New York Islanders legend Butch Goring on Washington Capitals player Dale Hunter taking out Islanders’ leading scorer, Pierre Turgeon: “They were going to get beat and he was going to get his pound of flesh.”
Maloney: “Imagine if we had YouTube, the Internet, NHL.com, ESPN, MSG, everything (back then)…that’d be all over the place. I’ll tell you one thing, he knew exactly who he was hitting.”
Daneyko: “If you weren’t trying to get the star player out, you weren’t trying; that was the attitude. That’s what the coaches preached to you, believe it or not.”
Maloney: “In those days, unlike today where tough guys fight tough guys, in that day everyone had to defend themselves to a degree. Turgeon had a target on him for his greatness.”
Daneyko: “You were after the star player, dirty or not, after the whistle or not. You did anything in those days to win.”
