The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition gets underway on Saturday night at 7 p.m. on NBCSN. While Sunday’s All-Star Game is a 3-on-3 tournament between the divisions, Saturday’s skills competition will be an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference matchup.
John Tavares – who is captaining the Metropolitan Division All-Stars – will participate in two of the six events on Saturday. As a captain, he and Atlantic Division captain Jaromir Jagr selected the skaters for each competition.
Tavares will participate in the DraftKings NHL Accuracy Shooting competition and the Discover NHL Shootout. In the accuracy shooting competition the Islanders’ captain will be trying to hit four targets – one in each corner of the net – from the slot taking passes from Nicklas Backstrom and Jagr. Tavares was in this competition last season hitting all four targets.
Tavares will also participate in the Discover NHL Shootout, skating in the third round.
The rules for the Discover NHL Shootout are explained below, per NHL.com
Eighteen skaters and three goaltenders from each team will participate in the three-round shootout. During each two-minute round, six skaters and one goalie from each team will take the ice. Teams will alternate after each shot with each player having a maximum of 10 seconds to take a shot. Players one and three from each team will be designated Discover puck players, each goal scored by these players will count as two points. NHL shootout rules apply to each scoring attempt.
Tavares will not participate in the fastest skater or hardest shot challenges, as well as the relay event and the NHL breakaway challenge.
