Eight-point week propels Isles center to top of league scoring

UNIONDALE, NY (October 17, 2011) – The National Hockey League announced today that Islanders forward John Tavares has been named the Second Star of the Week.

Tavares posted back-to-back four-point games last week, totaling five goals and three assists, as the Islanders won three-straight contests. The Mississauga, ON, native posted his first points of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 13 with two goals and two assists in the Islanders 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tavares then doubled his season total with another four-point game, netting his third-career hat trick, while also adding an assist in a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers.

Tavares’ eight points lead all Islanders this season and place him in a three-way tie for the league lead, alongside Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel (five goals, three assists) and Nashville Predators forward David Legwand (two goals, six assists).

Kessel was named the NHL’s first star today, while Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen was named the third star of the week.
