The National Hockey League announced today that New York Islanders center John Tavares
was named the First Star of the Month for January, 2012.
Tavares, 21, led the league in scoring last month with nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points. He recorded a point in 12-of-13 Islanders games and had a hand in 62.9% of the team’s goals (22 points on 35 goals). Tavares’ month also included four game-winning goals to help his club to a 7-5-1 record.
The first month of 2012 also saw Tavares extend his point streak to an NHL season-high 12 games. The third-year center posted eight goals and 13 assists during the stretch, which went from Dec. 31 to Jan. 21.
Tavares earned his first selection to the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 29 in Ottawa, where he scored a goal and an assist for Team Alfredsson.
The Islanders first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft is currently tied for fourth in the league in scoring with 53 points (22 goals, 31 assists). A native of Mississagua, ON, Tavares also led the Islanders in points during each of his first two seasons.
