First period goals by Matt Carle and Christian Ehrhoff were all San Jose needed as they and Evgeni Nabokov shutout the Islanders 2-0 at the Shark Tank. Nabokov made 26 saves for the win as the Islanders drop to 0-2-0 on the new season. Patrick Marleau added two assists for the Sharks.
Carle and Ehrhoff's tallies both came on the power play in the second half of the first frame. San Jose finished 2 for 6 on the man advantage, while the Islanders were 0 for 5. Rick DiPietro made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Islanders. Despite taking 26 shots, the Islanders had few quality scoring opportunities due to the strong defensive play by the Sharks.
San Jose brought the physical play early and often in the first period. At one point, Mike Grier and Ville Nieminen teamed up on Bruno Gervais for a big hit 12 minutes in. Both Gervais and Grier got the worst of it and both left the game for a short time.
Moments after the hit, the Sharks got on the board with Carle's power play goal. Chris Simon was in the box for slashing when Carle buried one from close range with Steve Bernier and Marleau getting the assists.
Then, with 2:27 left in the first, Ehrhoff notched his power play goal off a cross ice pass from Marleau from behind the goal line on the far side. Bernier got the second assist for his second point of the night.
