Remembering Cal

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

Throughout the month of October, the New York Islanders are encouraging fans to stand up in the fight against cancer. Today, the club would like to share a recent letter about Cal, a loyal fan who lost his battle with Leukemia last year.

My son Cal, a huge Islander fan, was diagnosed with Leukemia in Sept 2010. Hockey, especially the Islanders, was his passion. He was proud of the team having a Dane playing and followed Frans closely. Cal passed away last year after a 17 month battle at the age of 25. He would be so proud of you guys doing the cancer awareness month. I miss him terribly and now find myself following the Isles as my second fav. I named Cal after the Calgary Flames as I have been following them since the old WHA days in Atlanta. However to keep the memories of him alive I am rooting for the Isles more so now than ever. Thanks for what you do.

PS: enclosed is a pic of Cal in his jersey at an Ottawa/Isles game a couple of years ago, he got out of the hospital for the night to go to the game.
