Refs to Fans: Please Don't Make It Rain

by Jesse D. Eisenberg / New York Islanders

Sunday afternoon’s #Isles vs. Sabres game was delayed on two separate occasions when loose coins were thrown onto the ice. The first transgression amounted to a small pile of pennies that, once collected by an ice crew member, totaled about 50 cents. The second offense almost made it worth the crewman’s while, as a packet of dimes exploded across the neutral zone, totaling almost $2.00.

The referees threatened the crowd with an Islanders penalty to effectively put an end to the currency tossing, for fear that the trend would continue and fans would next hurl a few dollars worth of quarters or, worse yet, make it rain dollar bills.
