If you’ve ever made it to the New York Islanders Executive Offices, or even called in, you’ve met Bonnie Dreher.
She’s the Islanders gatekeeper, the team’s receptionist for the past 14 years, but has been a die-hard fan dating back to the dynasty years. She’s seen players come and go, but her all-time favorite will forever be Bobby Nystrom.
“I think it was the long blonde hair flowing in the wind as he skated in for a goal,” she said. “I just loved him. He was aggressive, he played the game, he loved the game and he looked good on the ice.”
Dreher said she has the best seat in the house, even if she sits at the desk during games.
“I’ve got the best seat in the house. The people I get to meet, the excitement on game day,” Dreher said. “I just love my job, everything about it.”
Interactions with Bobby Ny and helping fans aside, her favorite aspect of the job is interacting with people, ranging from players, fans, refs and management. Of course, she’s had her fair share of famous encounters, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“He thanked me for my son’s service and said hopefully he’ll get home okay,” Dreher said. (Her son, Doug, returned home safely from Afghanistan.)
