Following Thursday’s 5-4 OT win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Islanders were back on the ice for a Friday morning practice at Nassau Coliseum.
With back-to-back games over the weekend, Friday was the last full-team practice before Monday morning.
Here are some news, notes, quotes and pictures from Friday’s practice.
Practice Lines: The Islanders kept the same lines from Thursday’s game, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday’s practices.
Vanek-Nelson-Okposo, Grabner-Bailey-Clutterbuck, Lee-Strome-McDonald, Boulton-Cizikas-Halmo.
Nielsen/Martin Progress: Injured Islanders Frans Nielsen and Matt Martin both practiced with the team for the first time since the Olympic break. Both players sported black contact jerseys and head coach Jack Capuano said he saw big improvement, but Capuano did not update their status for this weekend’s games.
Call-Ups Impress: Call-ups Anders Lee (two goals), Ryan Strome (one assist), and Mike Halmo (four hits) each had an impact in Thursday’s win and impressed the Islanders players and coaching staff. Colin McDonald, who played on a line with Lee and Strome, shared his thoughts at today’s practice.
McDonald on Strome and Lee: They are good players, I thought we played pretty well last night. Strome is a skill guy, so I tried to get him the puck as much as possible and I tried to work with Anders down low and get to the front of the net. It was fun to play with those two and we’re happy that they were able to produce for us and help us get that win.
